ABOUT BLACKALL
Blackall is an attractive country town, rich in history, approximately 1000km north-west of Brisbane with trees down the centre of the main street and lots of old-style pubs.

The Barcoo River runs through Blackall and is dry for much of the year. The river is bordered by Coolibahs and Tea-Trees, and is famed for yellow-belly fishing.

Jackie Howe, the legendary shearer, is a man well remembered in this town. He holds the record for shearing 321 sheep in 7 hours and 40 minutes, with blade shears, at Alice Downs Station in 1892.

The town is supplied with pure, uncontaminated water from the Great Artesian Basin and is ideal for drinking. The water temperature in Blackall is 58 degrees Celsius, and needs to be cooled rather than heated.

Blackall was one of the first towns to drill for water and the Pioneer Bore can be seen at the end of Short Street. The Aquatic Centre has an artesian spa bath, and locally produced soft drinks are made from the artesian water. The Aquatic Centre is open all year, except for May.

Whilst in Blackall, visit the last remaining steam driven Woolscour in Australia, see the Black Stump, located behind the State School in Thistle Street, and visit the Blackall Cultural Centre, built in 1996 by Blackall Shire Council.
